Detailed Guide to the Best Wildlife Parks
Andasibe-Mantadia National Park
The most accessible major park from Antananarivo and the best place to hear (and often see) the Indri — Madagascar’s largest living lemur. The park combines Analamazaotra (Perinet) and the wilder Mantadia section. Excellent for first-time visitors.
Le Palmarium Private Reserve
A private reserve on the east coast known for very close encounters with lemurs, including the rare Aye-aye on night walks. Easy to combine with Andasibe.
Ranomafana National Park
A lush mid-altitude rainforest famous for the critically endangered Golden bamboo lemur. Requires a long drive but is one of the richest parks for biodiversity.
Kirindy Forest Reserve & Tsingy de Bemaraha
Western Madagascar highlights. Kirindy is one of the best places to see the Fossa and Verreaux’s sifaka. Tsingy de Bemaraha offers the spectacular limestone “stone forest” (UNESCO site) along with Decken’s sifaka.
Masoala National Park
Remote and spectacular lowland rainforest on the northeast coast. Home to the striking Red-ruffed lemur and excellent for humpback whales in season. Access only by boat from Maroantsetra.
Lokobe & Nosy Tanikely (Nosy Be area)
Lokobe protects primary forest on Nosy Be and is good for Black lemurs. Nosy Tanikely is a small marine park perfect for snorkelling and occasional whale sharks.
Isalo National Park
Dramatic sandstone canyons and natural swimming pools in the southwest. Best place for Ring-tailed lemurs in a dry landscape.
Ankarafantsika, Marojejy & Amber Mountain
Good options if you are focusing on the north or northwest. Ankarafantsika is relatively accessible and excellent for Coquerel’s sifaka. Marojejy and Amber Mountain are more remote but very rewarding for serious wildlife enthusiasts.
