Peru Ideal Itinerary – Based on Extensive research

Peru is continent inside a country. It is one of the very few mega diverse countries which has a vast coastline, massive desert, mountains, glacier and rain forests, all packed in one country. One can understand the degree of diversity in Peru by the fact that it haas 28 out of 32 diverse climate zones.

Given it’s diversity and it’s rich culture Peru requires 18+ days to atleast cover most important places. If you plan to cover glaciers etc. you require even more number of days.

Best time to go to Peru

May-June is ideal to go to Peru. May is the beginning of winter season and is ideal to visit Andean highlands and Amazon rainforest as it also a dry month. June is also considered a very good month although a bit colder. June is also the festival time in Peru and Peru’s biggest festival Inti Raymi (festival of sun) starts on June 24th in Cuzco

Ideal Itinerary for Peru

Most people end up covering South Peru starting from Lima and doing the full circuit till Cuzco. One can also extend it beyond Cuzco for Amazon rain-forest area.

Lima – Glimpse of Peruvian culture

Lima is a busy metropolis with chaotic traffic and one of the best food scene in South America.

Mirafloers Broadwalk

Mirafloers Broadwalk is a stunning cliff-top park and promenade in Lima. It has a dedicated shopping area and also has multiple park areas – Parque del Amor, María Reiche Park (depicting Nazca lines). It also offers Paragliding for adventure enthusiasts. This is a must visit in Peru and one can spend 2 hrs in the morning here.

Huaca Puclana

Paracas – Poor Man’s Galapagos

Paracas is often referred to as Poor man’s Galapagos because of the rich marine wildlife one can find at Islas Bellastas at a fraction of the cost as Galapagos.

Islas Bellastas & The Candelabra of Paracas

You need to take boat tour here to Islas Bellastas. You will be seeing ruch widlife including – Humboldt Penguin, Sea Lions, Dolphins, Fur Seals, Marine otters, Chilean Flamingos

Puno – City of Lake Titicaca

Early morning leave Arequipa and reach Puno. Puno hosts Lake Titicaca which is the highest navigable lake in the world. Lake is famous for floating villages. Do a boat trip in the Lake here before you leave for Cusco

From Cusco one can take a flight to Puerto Maldonado airport which is in the heart of rainforests in Peru.

First day one can go on a short guided trail walk (monkeys, birds, medicinal plants. During the night one can do a boat ride or walk for caimans, frogs, tarantulas

Second day one can take Long boat to Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick. Then once can do the return boat ride and take chance in spotting Jaguars. One can also take Oxbow lake paddle to view giant river otters, more monkeys, hoatzin birds, tapirs.

After few days in Tambopata national reserve it is time to wrap the trip and head back to Lima.
